Altrok Radio's FM Showcase: A Program Note

The webcast of the Altrok Radio FM Showcase is moving to Mondays...details below.

Primarily because it just makes more sense to air it at the beginning of the week rather than toward the end of it, but mostly because it has gotten a lot easier to make it happen (cool new editing software will, hopefully, do that for you) we're moving the FM Showcase to Mondays at 11:30am Eastern, with a preview early Monday at 0730 GMT.

But if you'd like to catch it at its original time, catch it today at 11:30am Eastern.

I suspect it's time to come up with something new for that slot, now that it's available...we'll see...

A Sale? On Wire? Yes, Please.

There's a very small intersection between "bargain hunter" and "classic punk fan", but this offer sits right in the middle of that segment of the Venn diagram...

Wire are offering their DVD, "The Scottish Play", featuring a 2004 performance that includes new tracks like "I Don't Understand" and "Spent", and classics like "Pink Flag"...and not only is it half-off, but they're throwing in an enamel Pink Flag logo pin (which I'm certain you'll find a lapel somewhere to grace.) That's all for GBP9.00, or about US$18.00; not bad for a CD/DVD set and a funky pin...

Just follow this link...

Firstly, the important stuff:

Altrok Radio is at http://www.altrokradio.com

Please remember to tune in whenever you can - every hour you listen turns into more visibility for the station; we show up higher in search listings, and such like that. And if you'd like to help us keep the stream running, check out the advertisers if they appeal to you; your interest actually helps fund us.

Now then, in addition to the outstanding Altrok Radio music mix that got us an Editor's Pick nod at Live365 and at About.com, we've added features we know you'll like...

(There's a preview airing at 2:30am Eastern Mondays, and this week we're also airing it at it's old time, 11:30am Thursday.)

And on Friday, it's Altrok's Eighties Friday: music from the eighties that mattered then AND now. An eight hour playlist that features some of the best that decade had to offer, drawing from all the music that was available at the time (yes, even from the seventies.)

But for now - we've got songs to let you know about.

This week, our Grinders (the stuff we play heavily) include music from:

...and for those listening in mono...

...our apologies. The mono web station doesn't update in the same way the stereo one does, and we hadn't gotten it updated with the Melody Reunion until just now.

That said, it's coming up in about half an hour (5:30), and since it's on a continuous loop, it'll be running right through 'til Monday morning. The start time for each repeat is a bit unpredictable, but after this on the next should be at about 11pm Eastern.

Don't worry, we've gotcha covered - you'll be able to hear this over a good dialup modem connection, no cable/DSL necessary. Folks with cell phones with unlimited data connections may want to try this option, too.

Melody Bar Reunion Replay - All Weekend On Altrok Radio

We're replaying the 2008 Melody Bar Reunion all weekend!

Here's the schedule:

Saturday, Feb. 23: 12:00 Noon, 7:00pm
Sunday, Feb. 24: 2:00am, 9:00am, 4:00pm

Again, thanks to everyone who came out for it - we will be doing it again. As always, keep an eye here on altrokradio.com for details.

Melody 2008 Reunion: Keep Those Photos Coming!

It's two days after and I'm still feeling so great about the event on Saturday. What energy, what love, what music! I know I speak for everyone when I say if we could go back in time and relive those nights at the Melody...sigh.

Saturday night proves how much it all still means to us. I hope we can do that for the rest of our lives. To hang out with all of you is such a powerful feeling. I love you all and always will. And what about Matt? Tell me he isn't magic, I dare you. He had such an amazing time, he told me afterward he hasn't had that much fun in a long time, and he's looking forward to the next one. Sounds good already, doesn't it...

As for the photos, so far we have about 147 uploaded to photobucket and they are all great. Now I know there are alot more photos from that evening, so get uploading to the site! Make sure to ask all your friends to make sure they send them in.

Go to photobucket.com and login in as meldoyreunion2008 and use the password reunion. It's easy to do so just do it! Or if you like, just email them to me at sbiceptz@verizon.net.

Now, as for video, there was someone who shot video all night long. Whoever you were, let us know where and when we can see that video, it should be amazing. If you could, put it up at both youtube and photobucket for everyone to see.

Finally, I want everyone to continue to send me via this site your email addresses. I will add them to my master list to keep everyone updated as to our future plans, which I must say at this point look very promising. Get all your emails to me as soon as you can. Send them to sbiceptz@verizon.net.

Next time we have to get Cal and Steve, so let's make that our project for next year, OK? And Tito too!

Help Us Find A Missing Step

So, once again, a stellar night was had by a couple hundred people last Saturday at the Melody Reunion in New Brunswick. Honestly, really, it was great.

But it's Monday now, and we're staring at a cold, hard reality:

That scene's gone, and there isn't one to replace it.

We've been trying, too. Drew Ruiz, IronMike and myself, all Melody stalwarts, have been spinning tracks at Running W/Scissors nights at The Court Tavern on a monthly basis since November.

The first one did okay. The second tanked (an ice storm), the third drew a small, but spirited crew, and the last crowd, while spirited, was even smaller; not enough to justify keeping it up. Everybody that came loved the music; they even managed to stay all night - there's just not enough of them coming.

Have we been talking it up? Sure!

But apparently not to people that are actually likely to go out on a Thursday night. There are people that are, in fact, out, too. We see 'em. They just don't know we exist.

And that's gonna be the nail in our coffin unless we figure out how to clue them in.

Your input is very welcome. We're talking about finding Rutgers students and people who live in New Brunswick, NJ, who would leave their warm homes and venture into the cold to go to the Court Tavern, and dance to the challenging sort of thing we used to play at The Melody Bar, here and now, on a Thursday night, in 2008.

We're missing the step between "Play music in a nightclub" and "have people show up".

Can you help us find it?

Melody Reunion 2008: Lightning in a Bottle, Again

I think everyone will agree that the 2008 Melody Bar Reunion was a smash success, maybe even better than last years! Thanks to Jigs for hooking us up with the Elks, and thanks to the Elks for hosting our event for free. The Elks seemed very happy with the turnout and the take at the bar, which is good because it goes to a good cause. Everyone won last night.

Of course we must be very thankful for the one and only Matt Pinfield who defied the Vegas odds makers and made his grand return to the town he made famous. It was easy to see how much fun Matt had spinning for all his old friends, as he had a smile on his face the entire night, and the crowd responded in kind by rocking nonstop for almost five hours. The music was perfect, the venue was perfect, the crowd was perfect, and my dancing was perfect.

It is bizarre to think that those magical Melody nights we all experienced were almost 20 years ago. Time sure does fly, doesn't it? The success of last night's event is a testament to how important the Melody and Matt and the music of that era still is to so many. We are so lucky we were the few who had the good fortune to find the Melody and appreciate it for the special place that it was, and most of that is because of Matt. Thanks Matt for making all our lives that much better.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made the event so much fun. As to the future, I say don't worry about that right now. Let's just enjoy last night for awhile, it was pretty good. As the late great Joe Strummer said, the future is unwritten.

Sean will have the show on this site soon so we can listen again, which will be a nice treat for next week.

The final task for everyone is to get all the photos they took last night uploaded to photobucket so we can relive the night again. Go to photobucket.com and log in as"melodyreunion2008" and use the password reunion. Just follow the instructions on the website, it's very easy. I can't wait to see all the photos of me.

Thanks to everyone once again!

What Can I Say?

It (that is, the Melody Bar Reunion) was great. Prepare for a very nice playback (yes, feedback, Elks moment of silence and all) next weekend, time and technology willing.

P.S.: And yes, Matt was there all night long. He, we (and everybody else) really had a blast.

TONIGHT, It's The Melody Bar Reunion 2008: Here's The Details

Okay, here it is, once and for all:

The Stiffy Biceptz challenge, by the way, is to not play anything we played last time - so, for the record, here's what we played a year ago, and here's what we played last September.

And here's your Google Maps link to the Lodge

We're starting up at 6pm. Last year when we did this, the floor was packed by 7:30pm, so be ready...

I'll be the one with the flashing drink.

Update 1: We just got promoed on G-Rock. That's it - it's gonna be sick.

G-Rock Radio's Doing A Retro Weekend...

...and it's pretty damn good. No, really.

(Of course, that said, you know what station maintains that level of quality at all times, and that level of retro quality every Friday...yes, of course you do. It's behind that Click 2 Listen link...)

See you at the Melody Bar Reunion tomorrow. (Right?)

Thursday, February 14, 2008

TONIGHT: Running W/Scissors at The Court Tavern! (And don't forget the Melody Reunion...)

Last things first: the next Melody Bar Class Of '77-'92 Reunion is at the Elks Lodge in New Brunswick on Saturday, February 16. It's gonna start early (6PM) and last a while - for the last old-school reunion a year ago, the dance floor was packed at 7:30 (it was like we were on British time!) So fashionably late may be *really* late - get there early.

But if you want to be sure you're properly tuned up for Saturday, here's a place to be tonight:

Click for more info and updates

Everyone's returned to New Brunswick, nobody has to cram for any exams, and it's a classic Rutgers Thursday Night...it'll be The Place. Be there.

Congratulations, you've found the hidden text.

Welcome to Altrok.com, also available at AltrokRadio.com and AltrockRadio.com. Here's where the remaining listeners of several fine radio stations have retreated, regrouped, and built a replacement strong enough to stand on its own. It builds on the independent legacy of New Jersey's FM106.3, New York's WPIX and WLIR, Oklahoma's 105.3 The Spy, the pre-buyout mindset of KROQ, WBCN and WHFS and of every other alternative station that was destroyed at a moment's notice - not because they weren't making money, but because there was bigger money to be found elsewhere.

We've stood by as truly independent alternative rock radio died. Sure, something called "alternative" took its place, but we know for sure that anything that "tests well" with soccer moms just ain't alternative. (Even if some of us happen to be soccer moms.) So we've taken matters into our own hands.

This really is independent alternative rock radio, visible here at Altrok.com and audible at our web radio station. It has the classic music that fired our passions back in the day - or that we maybe only heard about from our elders - but it's mostly made of the new music that does precisely the same for us now. We're paying attention to scenes all over the world, watching the energy build, and waiting to see what it creates. Wherever it happens, we'll make sure you can hear about it here. We've been slowly building all this since 2001, and now that you've noticed us, we're glad you're here.

Of course, it's only here because you want it to be here, and it can only stay if you help it along - especially by checking out our advertisers (they support us) and by listening (the more that listen, the more visible we are.) Please use the "feedback" link above to let us know whether it works for you, and what you want it to be as the future unfolds. (And if you need help hearing it, let us know that, too.)
